Zimbabwe Wells Project

Our student Giving Goal has been reached!!  This past year, our college students raised over $6,000 to drill a well in Mberengwa, Zimbabwe for a local orphanage (Read project details below).  Praise God for His mighty work, and thank Him for involving us, His people, in His global mission!  Please continue to lift up this region in prayer as God continues to move, and this community is blessed with a clean water source!  Pray that the manner in which this is done would exalt the gospel of Jesus, and that these children would be exposed to the living water!

Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.  Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

Christ’s church has been commissioned to bless the nations with the beautiful gift of the gospel.  First Baptist Bryan has connected with missionaries in Zimbabwe, Africa to make disciples and display the love of Christ among the unbelievers in this region.  Find out more below about how we are helping missionaries in this region by building wells for a local orphanage. _

What God is Doing

Gregg and Donna Fort are long term workers in Zimbabwe, Africa.

In recent years our church body has connected with the Forts by sending teams of short term workers to help assist with local needs as well as to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in nearby villages.  Our teams have been amazed by the work of the Holy Spirit in this area as men, women, and children have put their faith in Jesus by the hundreds!  The gospel of Jesus Christ has been spreading throughout the region, and in the last year and a half, 8 churches have been planted and over 1,200 have trusted in Christ for their salvation as communities of new believers have joined in sharing their faith with friends, families, and nearby villages.

Current Needs

Roughly 30% of children in this region have lost both of their parents, and another 30% have lost one parent, producing a cycle of failure as children are left without an education, job, or the necessary tools to provide for their basic needs.  Many women who have tested positive for HIV are without the means to feed their children and are struggling to get by.  Limited access to water has also made life more difficult for locals.  Currently, the only nearby working water well has a broken cap and has been gushing water, creating a mosquito infested marsh near the town’s only water supply.

How Needs Are Being Met

Currently, Gregg and Donna are working on a development project to construct housing and schooling facilities for orphaned children in this area.  The project will take place over several phases and will include water wells, dining facilities, a school house, library, computer room, showers, and huts to house orphaned children in this region.  Both water wells will be built on site for use by the children and locals.

A single borehole (water well) will cost approximately $6,000 U.S. to dig and equip with proper pumps.

How You Can Help

GIVE:  We are asking our college students to join the work by giving to support the digging of water wells.  Donations of any amount are acceptable, and all gifts will be tax deductible.  Our goal for this project is to raise $6,000 and fully fund the digging of one borehole.

You will find a link at the top or bottom of this page if you wish to donate to this project.

PRAY: Right now we are aslo asking our college students and others to join us in praying for continued gospel-advancement in and beyond this region by local churches, and for Christians to help meet the basic needs of those dwelling in unhealthy living conditions.

GO: We have been blessed to join God in His work through personal contact with the developing church planting effort in this region. Contact Brian Crump:  Brian@fbcbryan.org, for more info on upcoming trips to this region.

Creative Ways to Give

We realize, being in college, it can be difficult to find money to feed yourself, much less support another’s needs.  We’d encourage you to be creative in finding ways to give, perhaps radically, for the purposes of making Christ and his love known to the people in Zimbabwe.  Below are a few ways to scrounge up money to prayerfully give to the building of Boreholes (water wells) in Africa.

  • Buzzes for Boreholes-  save the $15/month you would otherwise spend on getting a haircut for one semester, and buzz your head (recommended for guys only).
  • Baking for Boreholes- turn $5 into $50 by baking goodies for co-workers, study groups, friends, family, or others you may know and let them know all proceeds go to build wells.
  • Other Ideas:   Baby-sit, mow yards, rake leaves, walk-dogs, drink water, make your lunch, sell your old stuff on Craigslist, buy-fix-sell on craigslist, give lessons for that instrument you rock at, or sell old school-books. You can also Google search “how to make a quick buck” and see what you find!

The sky is the limit!  Be creative and have fun!  Partner up with friends and find a way to double your efforts.  We’d love for you to join each other in prayer over the lives that will be blessed by the digging of these wells.  Pray together for the greater joy of Zimbabwe through gospel proclamation and acts of love in Jesus’ name!
